Job Description:
Function: Under general supervision is responsible for promoting and ensuring the health, safety, and development of students with unique medical and educational needs including assisting with daily needs, providing assessments and emergency care
Directly Responsible to: School Administration
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Assess, monitor, evaluate, and administer emergency treatments and interventions, first aid, and emergency care for the physical and medical conditions of students
- Communication with doctors and parents as needed for proper treatment of injuries, illnesses, and medication
- Refer significant health problems to parents for further diagnosis and remedy
- Communicates regularly with parents concerning the health of their child(ren); provides guidance and instruction for proper health care
- Provides hands-on medical care to students with complex medical needs including administering medications, monitoring vital signs, assisting with feeding and bathroom needs, and addressing immediate health concerns.
- Collaborate and work closely with school administration, teachers, therapists, caseworkers, healthcare professionals psychologists, and support staff to create a safe and supportive classroom environment tailored to individual student needs
- Maintain accurate health records and develop care plans for each medically fragile student in collaboration with families and healthcare providers
- Assist staff in understanding and implementing medical protocols, fostering an inclusive and well-prepared classroom environment
- Respond promptly to medical emergencies, implement appropriate interventions, and ensure the safety of all students
- Use various tools and equipment such as stethoscope, otoscope, thermometer, audio/visual equipment, first aid supplies, CPR shield, protective clothing, and AED
- Attends meetings for students as requested by school administration
- Maintains confidentiality of personally identifiable data on students
- Prepares a wide variety of records and reports
- Reviews and maintains OSHA standards for healthcare
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Maintains current Registered Nurse License with the South Carolina Board of Nursing
- Maintains current Basic Life Support (CPR) for Healthcare Providers
- Extensive knowledge in the promotion and maintenance of physical and emotional health
- Knowledge of proper practices, methods, and procedures required for providing proper healthcare
- Knowledge of methods for detecting illness, injury, or disease
- Knowledge of proper health screening methods and procedures
- Knowledge of all local and state regulations and standards pertaining to school healthcare programs
- Knowledge of pediatric/school nursing practices
- Knowledge of all records and reports which must be completed and required by the school and/or state
- Knowledge of equipment, machines, tools, and supplies required in providing proper healthcare
- Ability to provide healthcare that promotes and maintains the optimum health status of students
- Ability to interpret and apply school policies and procedures as well as local and state laws and regulations pertaining to healthcare
- Ability to assess, evaluate, and monitor the health and development strategies through appropriate screening techniques
- Ability to identify students needing further diagnosis and treatment, and to provide appropriate referrals and/or obtain further assistance from outside sources
- Ability to maintain all required forms, records, and reports
- Ability to provide healthcare counseling and training to staff and parents
- Ability to interact effectively, professionally, and positively with staff, students, parents, and all other groups and individuals involved in the activities of the job and classroom
- Experience working with children with intellectual disabilities and/or medically fragile conditions is highly preferred
